Oregon Receives $197 Million in Federal Funding for Rural Healthcare
Oregon will receive $197.3 million in federal funding through the CMS Rural Health Transformation Program, OHA announced. Part of a $50 billion nationwide initiative distributed to all 50 states between 2026 and 2031 for rural healthcare.
As the Oregon Capital Chronicle reported, the investment arrives as Oregon grapples with an estimated $400 million per year in losses from Medicaid changes. The $197 million over multiple years does not offset that deficit.
Oregon has 30 critical access hospitals and dozens of rural clinics. Bay Area Hospital nearly collapsed. Santiam Hospital is merging with Salem Health. Federal funds could stabilize some facilities, but only if OHA deploys quickly and targets the most acute needs.
Watch for: OHA's implementation plan — which communities receive priority, and whether funding reaches hospitals on the brink. The larger question: can $197 million offset hundreds of millions in Medicaid cuts?
