Providence Shutters Occupational Health Services at Four Portland-Area Clinics
Providence permanently closed occupational health services at four Portland-area clinics — Bridgeport, Clackamas, Tanasbourne, and Newberg — laying off 43 workers. KGW reported Providence lost more than half its occupational medicine clinicians over two years.
The retreat is part of a broader strategic pivot. Providence is moving away from occupational medicine to concentrate on primary care, urgent care, and specialty services. This follows a national trend of health systems shedding lower-margin employer-focused services.
For Portland employers, the closures create a significant gap. Occupational health clinics handle pre-employment physicals, drug screenings, workers' comp injury care, and return-to-work evaluations. NW Labor Press reported unions raised concerns about delayed treatment for injured workers.
Watch for: Whether Concentra or other national occupational health chains absorb the displaced volume. Also watch whether Providence's broader restructuring leads to additional service line closures.
